What is this?
A browser-based configuration editor for the Garmin GDL 82, a UAT (978 MHz) ADS-B Out datalink that installs in-line with an aircraft's existing transponder. Normally you'd configure it with Garmin's Windows-only GDL 8X Install Tool; gdleditor reads and edits the same settings over USB straight from Chrome or Edge — on a Mac, Windows, or Linux, with nothing to install. Connect plugs into the unit's USB‑B harness lead.
GDL 82 config fields, explained
| ICAO address | The 24‑bit Mode S address transmitted by ADS‑B Out, derived from the tail number (e.g. N76MT → AA4054). A wrong value broadcasts the wrong identity. |
| Registration / tail | The aircraft N‑number. |
| Emitter category | ADS‑B aircraft type/size class (e.g. Light). An incorrect or unset value can draw an FAA performance‑report finding. |
| Vs0 / stall speed | Used by the unit's air/ground determination. |
| GPS source | Internal WAAS GPS, or an external navigator feeding position. |
| Anonymous mode | Whether an anonymous‑mode switch is installed. |
| 1090ES‑IN / UAT‑IN | Which ADS‑B In receive capabilities the installation has. |
| Faults | The unit's self‑reported faults (configuration, aircraft‑ID, factory‑calibration, etc.). |
Running it on a Mac (no Windows, no VM)
The GDL 82 is a vendor‑specific USB device, so the browser talks to it directly via WebUSB — there's no driver to install and no Windows machine or virtual machine needed. Use Chrome or Edge on the desktop. Safari and Firefox don't implement WebUSB.
GDL 82 vs GDL 84 / GDL 88
The GDL 82 is a USB device and works in the browser today. The GDL 84 and GDL 88 present a serial (virtual COM port) connection instead, which uses a different browser API and isn't supported here yet.
